Recovery Profile: Tracie, struggling with sexual abuse as a child

One of the great things about being a leader in a 12-step recovery program is that I come into contact with people every day who are confronting their hurts or unhealthy habits, growing in their relationship with God and with others, and sharing their stories with others who may be struggling in similar ways.

While the recovery journey is filled with bumps along the way, we also experience “small victories” that encourage us–and others–to keep going.

Every three to four weeks, I will profile people who have made “small victories” along their recovery journey. Each profile is voluntarily submitted and, therefore, used with permission.

I hope you will take a few moments to affirm their courage and to think about how you relate to their story, even if you don’t struggle in the same ways.

Our first profile is Tracie.

Hi, my name is Tracie. I’m a grateful believer in Jesus Christ, and I struggle with sexual abuse as a child.

For most of my life, I have been very scared, lonely, and full of self-esteem issues. I knew I needed to get help, so I started attending a recovery group. In the past several years, I’ve learned that I’m not the only one who was sexually abused as a child. But now I believe that God was with me through it all, He took care of me, and it has made me the person I am today. He has given me friends who love me for me, they support me, and don’t judge me for the things I’ve done. My relationship with God is amazing right now: I’ve never been so close to Him, and I rely on Him for everything. I am now more confident, and I have Jesus to thank for it.

If you are struggling with sexual abuse, I encourage you to find a place where you are comfortable opening up. Pray for healing. God will do it.

Come alongside… How do you relate to Tracie’s story?
