Roll it away!

Hi, friends!

How are your bowling skills? Are you in the 300 club? In the “gutter?” Or somewhere in between?

I’m in the gutter club. Well, maybe a little bit higher than that. 😉 Seriously, though, I’m not that great at it. I don’t practice; I don’t make it a priority. Even my grade-school children are better at it than I am.

How are your bowling skills in life? Do you hang on to the ball?

  • Worries
  • Career
  • Family
  • Illness
  • Plans

Do you run after them down the lane? Or do you roll them away and let them go?

Listen to this verse from the Bible:

Commit to the LORD everything you do. Then your plans will succeed. (Proverbs 16:3 NIrV)

What does that verse have to do with bowling? Everything.

When we commit our lives to God—our hurts; our circumstances; the things that stress us out; our plans, we roll them away to Him, literally. That’s what the Bible says in its original wording.

Here are other translations of the same verse:

“Roll unto Jehovah thy works, And established are thy purposes” (YLT).

“Roll your works upon the Lord [commit and trust them wholly to Him; He will cause your thoughts to become agreeable to His will, and] so shall your plans be established and succeed” (AMP).

Can you visualize it? Can you feel the heaviness of the ball? Can you feel your body lifting as you let it go? Can you see God waiting for it at the end of the lane, cheering you on?

You can do it! Roll it to me! I’ll take care of it!

Today, I want to encourage you: Roll it away to Him—all your cares, plans, pursuits. You might wobble a bit as you let the ball go. It might go straight, or it might veer to the left or to the right. It doesn’t matter, as long as you roll it to Him. As you watch it roll away down the lane, your mind and heart will become fixed on Him, immovable, established, calm, at peace.

He will take it from there. Just roll it away!

Word of the Year: 2014

Happy new year, friends!

For the past several years, I’ve meditated on a word for that specific year.

  • Freedom
  • Grace
  • Trust
  • Growth

Last year, my word was fearless. I mentioned specific fears I wanted to release:

  • Not measuring up as a newbie parent.
  • Declining physical and mental illness.
  • Dying and leaving my husband and family behind.
  • Being good enough to write my own book.

Big things! But…thanks be to God: He has helped me not to be consumed with these things.

  • I’ve lowered my high expectations of being the perfect parent and allowed myself to make mistakes and not feel like a failure.
  • God has helped me to manage my physical and mental illnesses. I can honestly say I’m doing well.
  • Of course, no one likes to think about dying and leaving their family behind, but I don’t let that overwhelm me like it did before last year. I’m still a little fearful, though.
  • And as you already know, I did write my book. 🙂
  •

Isn’t God good?

If you’re struggling with fear, please remember this great verse from 2 Timothy 1:7:

God didn’t give us a spirit that makes us weak and fearful. He gave us a spirit that gives us power and love.

Fear not!

This year, I’ve been a little back and forth on my word for the year. But after much thought, my word for 2014 is:

CONSISTENCY

That’s a heavy one for me because sometimes–well, a lot of times, I’m all over the place and I overlook stuff–important stuff. So… here are the areas I want to focus on:

  • Prayer and Bible reading
  • Hubby and me time
  • Me time
  • Family time
  • Writing and blogging
  • Encouraging
  • Praising

That might seem like a lot–and it is, but I think I need to follow through with my good intentions. Hey, there’s no sense in scheduling stuff on my electronic calendar if I’m going to ignore the alerts, right? 😀

This is my verse for the year, from 1 Corinthians 9:25-27.

All good athletes train hard. They do it for a gold medal that tarnishes and fades. You’re after one that’s gold eternally. I don’t know about you, but I’m running hard for the finish line. I’m giving it everything I’ve got. No sloppy living for me! I’m staying alert and in top condition. I’m not going to get caught napping, telling everyone else all about it and then missing out myself.

So, by God’s strength alone, I will not be led astray by distractions.

I will be consistent!

Come alongside….Would you say you are consistent? If not, what areas do you need to work on? What is your word for 2014?

Coping with Change

6 Ways You Can Cope with ChangeI embrace it.

I reject it.

I long for it.

I avoid it.

I enjoy it.

I dislike it.

I’m talking about change.

Can you relate?

Parts of me want change; other parts resist it.

Sometimes, we bring change on ourselves. Sometimes, change finds us. New careers. Illness. Family dynamics. Moving. Any number of life events can produce mixed feelings within us.

  • We welcome new adventures, but we don’t want to give up our routines.
  • We like new challenges, but we don’t want to be too uncomfortable.
  • We see great opportunities, but we don’t want to make the effort.

How do we cope with change? How can we balance the push into the unknown with the pull of the familiar?

C – Call to God for wisdom.

With any life event, some things need to change; others don’t. Sometimes we focus on the wrong things. Other times, we resist changing anything. When we have the courage to ask God to show us the things that truly need to change, we are better positioned to allow Him to work in those areas. And we’re free to continue enjoying the things that don’t need immediate change. He alone can teach us to identify our immediate growth areas (Psalm 119:66; Psalm 139:23).

H – Have a support system.

We’ve never been here before, so it’s best to get all the advice and instruction we can (Proverbs 19:20). But it’s not all about getting advice. When we find people who are experiencing the same things, we relate to each other’s struggles. Sometimes words aren’t even necessary—they get it. Having people who are also on the other side of the transition or life change can give us valuable insight on how to handle the ups and downs of our new life.

A – Avoid comparison.

Sometimes we look at others who are further down the path, and we want to be like them—immediately. We forget that they weren’t always there themselves. They too had to go through initial stages of their own changes. Of course, we can learn from them, but we are not them. We might say, “That is where I want to be,” but God might have a different way of getting us there. (Proverbs 16:9).

N – Note the ups and downs of the journey.

We each have a story to tell. No one else can tell our story. Keeping a record of both the big and little steps of the journey helps us not to lose sight of where we started, where we are, and where we’re going. It doesn’t have to be a formal journal—it can be as simple as making and collecting our own “memorabilia.” Along the way, we can pull out our notes and share with others how God has helped us each step of the way (Psalm 102).

G – Give thanks to God.

He never changes! We can rely on Him when everything around us is in flux. “He is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). What a relief! We can also thank Him for giving us the gift of change. Yes, the gift!

Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors. So don’t try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way. (James 1:2-4)

When God says it’s time for us to change, He knows we are ready to move to a new level in Him. Thank you, God, for believing in us.

E – Enjoy the ride!

Let’s celebrate our small victories. Laugh at our mistakes. Look for glimmers of hope in our new realities. After all, we serve the God of all hope. We’re going to screw up. We’ll have moments of sheer frustration, anger, disappointment, and discouragement. It’s okay—we can feel those feelings too. We will cry, but we will also laugh (Psalm 30:5b). We will grieve, but we will also dance (Psalm 30:11).

Change.

How are you coping with it?

Come alongside… What changes are you going through? How can you use these tips to help you? Whom do you know who needs to hear these words today? Will you share this with them?

A Stream of Dreams

One simple question–just one–opened the floodgates.

Where do you see us in five years?

My husband and I lay in bed facing each other, our heads on the pillows. One simple question. A stream of dreams.

  • For our careers.
  • Our family.
  • Our church.
  • Our neighborhood.

Some dreams were goofy; others serious. Nonetheless, they were–they are–our dreams.

Yourself5

God wants us to dream. He places desires in us and the power to carry them out (Philippians 2:13). He rejoices when we give ourselves the freedom to dream–to express our desires–big or small. Whether we want…

  • A family.
  • Our own business.
  • Friends that are welcome at any time.
  • A dog to play with.
  • Missions trips to spread the good news of Jesus Christ.

God can make my dreams a reality. My life can take a sudden turn, and things don’t turn out as I dreamed. But God’s ways are not my ways (Isaiah 55:8). When I think of how God has brought me to this very place in my life–how all the events and life decisions to this point are shaping my innermost dreams into reality, not even the best Hollywood director could have written my story.

And to think of what is yet to come!

My mind goes to the Biblical character Esther–an orphaned Hebrew young girl adopted by her uncle and later made Queen alongside the Persian King Xerxes. She later saved the lives of her Jewish people. I’m sure she never saw that in her dreams. But God did!

We–like Esther–can have a life far better than those in movies because we have the Master Storymaker.

No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him (1 Corinthians 2:9).

Come alongside…What dream has been taking shape within you? Would you speak it into existence–give it life with your words? Will you let God make it a reality in whatever way He chooses?
